"We've got no right to complain about our leaders until we've given them the leadership they need. That's how it works."

—Bill McKibben, founder 350.org

Declaration of Leadership

I hereby declare my leadership and call upon Governor Deval Patrick to work with the student leaders of Massachusetts Power Shift to introduce a bill moving the Commonwealth of Massachusetts towards 100% Clean Electricity in the next 10 Years.

I further call on the Massachusetts Legislature to pass this bill before the beginning of the international climate negotiations in Copenhagen, Denmark, which commence on December 7th, 2009.

I further declare that:

  1. No human being, now or in the future, should be forced to suffer from my consumption of electricity, whether a Commonwealth citizen suffering from cancer, asthma, or mercury poisoning today, or a global citizen suffering from malnutrition, malaria, or resource-wars tomorrow.
  2. Every human being should have the right to clean electricity, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a responsibility to ensure that all of its citizens can use their electricity with clean consciences.

In order to promote this declaration and the values and goals contained within it, I hereby pledge to use all non-violent methods available and will personally commit to seeing the goals achieved through the courage of my conviction, the clarity of my vision, and the unyielding nature of my principled determination.

Wake Up, Sleep Out!

Wednesday, April 21st, on the Boston Common across from the State House.

Join students, religious leaders and community members, forego the comfort of home and demonstrate that we're ready to lead.  When we arise Thurday morning on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, we will walk into the State House to lobby our representatives.

Sleeping Out will be fun, informative and most importantly, send the signal to our elected officials that we're not going to wait to take action, and that we are willing to sacrifice for a secure future for ourselves and our children.
